Volunteer
For all of you interested in the mission of Appleton Excel Volleyball Club, please seriously consider volunteering your time and talent to the Club. Excel is a unique sports club in our area, staffed entirely by volunteers interested in the sport and the mission of the Club. There are several good Clubs in our area, but Excel and its people are special.
Formed by an interested group of parents and coaches in 2003, Excel provides an alternative for about 70 youth players of various ages each season. Described by some alumni as “the fun club” or “the friendly club”, it has provided a terrific experience for many of the 200 or so families involved so far.
Excel is unique in many ways, one of which is the fact the Club is run by volunteers. Coaches volunteer their time to work with the players, parents assist the coaches in administering certain non-coaching details of each team, and interested adults step up in many jobs from equipment management, facilities scheduling, tournament planning, fund raising and numerous other areas. Adults with experience in the Club are often asked to serve on the Board of Directors or even as one of the Board officers.
Each year we need many new volunteers to replace those who have served and are now moving on to other interests. Our volunteers typically serve from one to five years, sometimes in several different jobs in that time. We need many new volunteers each year. We like to have lots of people involved, which keeps the burden lighter for everyone.
Some ask whether they can volunteer if they do not have a player in the Club. Absolutely yes! We often have volunteers who have players in other Clubs or whose player is no longer active in Club volleyball. Some also ask if their player is automatically selected for an Excel team if they volunteer. Of course, that would not be possible because we want to keep tryouts a truthful and meaningful process. In some circumstances, a volunteer does withdraw if their player does not receive an offer from Excel and decides to play for another Club. But this does not happen frequently. More often the volunteer stays on and we adjust their duties so they can see their player perform.
On another page of the “Volunteer” section of the web site is a list of jobs you can volunteer for in our Club. Each has differing time commitments and skills required. Please consider how you can help the Club by volunteering your time and skills. This Club cannot exist without sufficient volunteer help. It is tempting to “let someone else do it” but often when people count on that, they are surprised when there is no team at an age level of interest or worse … no club at all! So if you believe in what Excel is doing be sure to volunteer to help as best you can.
Thank You,
Appleton Excel Volleyball Club Inc.
